"France's trade deficit keeps getting worse." It has actually more than halved since its 2022 record — even though the latest known month, July 2026, showed a fresh deterioration.

-€61.6bn France's rolling twelve-month trade deficit at end-July 2026, versus -€164bn in 2022

In July 2026, France's trade balance stood at -€6.7bn, a €0.9bn deterioration on the month — imports rose (+€1.1bn, driven by cars and aerospace) faster than exports (+€0.2bn). Over the rolling twelve months, the cumulative deficit reached -€61.6bn at end-July 2026. That's a long way from the -€164bn record hit in 2022, at the height of the energy-price spike: the deficit narrowed to -€79.3bn in 2024, then -€69.2bn in 2025, and kept narrowing into 2026 despite July's air pocket.

Does France's trade deficit keep getting worse every year?

No: since the 2022 record (-€164bn) it has more than halved, to -€61.6bn over the latest twelve known months.

In other words: one month's deterioration says nothing about the underlying trend, which has been improving since 2022.

Four caveats that belong with the number

  • The deficit is still large in absolute terms: even at -€61.6bn, it remains well above the -€58.1bn recorded in 2019, before the pandemic and energy crisis.
  • Most of the improvement since 2022 comes from falling energy import prices, not a structural rebound in French exports.
  • The goods balance tracked here isn't the whole picture: France runs a solid surplus on services (tourism, shipping), which improves the overall current-account balance.
  • A one-off deterioration, like July's, can reflect volatile monthly factors (aircraft deliveries, the car cycle) without signalling a trend reversal.

Why it still matters: judging France's trade trajectory from a single month, rather than several years, can flip the conclusion entirely.

For you

  • Did you think France's trade deficit was worsening year after year?
  • Can a rising monthly figure coexist with an improving underlying trend?
