3.0% the year-on-year rise in consumer prices in September 2026 (Insee flash estimate), against 2.4% in August

According to Insee's flash estimate published on 30 September 2026, consumer prices rise 3.0% year on year in September, after 2.4% in August. Energy rises 21.2% over a year, food 1.5% and services 2.2%, while manufactured goods fall 0.3%. Over one month, prices fall 0.3%. The harmonised index (HICP) rises 3.4% year on year. Final results are due on 15 October 2026.

What does Insee say about September inflation?

3.0% year on year, against 2.4% in August, with energy at +21.2% over a year: a flash estimate.

In other words: prices are 3.0% higher than a year ago, and energy explains much of the acceleration.

Five caveats that belong with the number

  • This is a flash estimate: Insee notes these data are not used for contractual indexation; final results come out on 15 October 2026.
  • Over one month prices fall 0.3%: the seasonal post-summer drop in services prices outweighs the energy rise.
  • Excluding energy, increases are milder: food +1.5%, services +2.2%, manufactured goods −0.3% year on year.
  • The HICP, the harmonised European measure, gives 3.4%: the gap with the national index comes from different methods.
  • One month is not a trend: the October index is due on 30 October 2026.

Why it still matters: official inflation at 3.0% is a flash estimate driven by energy; the final figure will be known on 15 October.
