"France has never created so many businesses." True: up 10.8% over twelve months. But two in three of those creations are simply sole-trader registrations.

Insee publishes the number of businesses created every month. Over the twelve months from August 2025 to July 2026, the total rose sharply, by 10.8% against the previous twelve months. The breakdown by type is far less uniform: micro-entrepreneur registrations rose 13.5%, company formations 6.6%, and conventional sole traders 3.0%. Over the first seven months of 2026, 751,342 businesses were created, of which 499,729 were micro-entrepreneurs, 187,840 companies and 63,773 conventional sole traders.
Does a record number of business creations signal a strengthening productive base?
Not directly: 66.5% of the creations in the first seven months of 2026 were micro-entrepreneurs.
In other words: the counter measures registrations, not businesses that employ anyone.
Five caveats that belong with the number
- The ratio of 499,729 to 751,342 is a division of two figures published in the same Insee table, not an estimate.
- A micro-entrepreneur registration implies neither an employee nor any turnover: the status allows a declaration of zero euros.
- The monthly pace is not pointing upwards: in July 2026 creations fell 1.3%, after -2.5% in June.
- Company formations are rising, but at half the pace of micro-businesses: 6.6% against 13.5%.
- These figures count creations only, never closures: they say nothing about the net change in the business population.
Why it still matters: a rise in business creations measures first of all the appeal of a registration status, not necessarily more economic activity.
For you
- Did you know two in three business creations are micro-entrepreneurs?
- Should we count registrations, or businesses that employ people?
