Ze Finance fact card: Markets & stock market
1 share one SpaceX share pledged to every American child (more than 70 million children) for 2027 — a gift estimated at more than $10 billion (based on ~$146 per share).

On 19 October 2026, Elon Musk announced on X that he would give “every kid in America” one of his SpaceX shares, a gift planned for 2027 and described as “the first of many.” With more than 70 million children under 18 in the U.S. (Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics) and a share valued at around $146, the press puts the gesture at more than $10 billion, about 1% of his fortune. Musk did not say who would be eligible, or how the shares would be delivered or held for minors. Some media mention “Trump Accounts” (children’s savings accounts) as a possible vehicle, unconfirmed.

Is receiving a SpaceX share the same as available money?

Not directly: SpaceX is not publicly listed. Its shares are private, illiquid and cannot be freely sold like a listed stock. The announced value is an estimate (private sales, ~$146 a share), not a public market price.

In other words: a pledged private share is not a cheque: its value is estimated, and you cannot necessarily turn it into cash when you want.

Four caveats that belong with the number

  • This is an announcement made on X on 19 October 2026, not (yet) a defined scheme: eligibility, mechanism and timing are unspecified.
  • SpaceX is not publicly listed: its shares are private and illiquid, so hard to sell freely.
  • The “more than $10 billion” value is an estimate (about $146 a share × more than 70 million children), not a public market price.
  • Musk calls it a “first” gift; no citizenship, residency or minor-holding rules have been set out. “Trump Accounts” are cited as a possible vehicle, unconfirmed.

Why it still matters: to understand: a share’s value depends on whether it is listed and tradable. A private share, even estimated at a high price, is really worth only what you can get by selling it — which, for SpaceX, is not free.

For you

  • Do you know the difference between a listed stock and a private share?
  • To you, is a share “worth” its stated price or what you can actually get for it?
