Ze Finance fact card: Savings & financial products
Confirmed Orange officially confirmed, on 21 October 2026 (@Orange_France on X), disruptions on its mobile network; no number of affected customers or cause was disclosed.

On 21 October 2026, Orange confirmed on X disruptions on its mobile network (calls, SMS, mobile internet), saying its teams were “fully mobilised to restore the network as soon as possible.” The operator speaks of “disruptions,” not a “national outage,” and disclosed neither the number of affected customers nor the cause. Sosh, Orange’s low-cost brand, uses the same network, so its customers may be affected. Bouygues Telecom, SFR and Free run separate networks — at this stage, nothing confirms an outage at those. Outage-report platforms (Downdetector) showed a rise in user reports.

Can a mobile network outage block my payments?

Partly: without mobile network, you may not receive bank SMS validation codes (3-D Secure), or be able to use banking apps or mobile payment over data. But card payments in shops (the merchant’s terminal) and ATM withdrawals do not depend on YOUR mobile network.

In other words: a telecom outage doesn’t touch your money; it can only cut, for a while, some ways of reaching it from your phone.

Four caveats that belong with the number

  • Orange speaks of “disruptions,” not a “national outage”; no number of affected customers was disclosed.
  • Sosh uses Orange’s network: its customers may be affected. Bouygues, SFR and Free are separate networks — nothing confirms an outage there.
  • Your in-shop card payments and ATM withdrawals do not depend on your mobile network; SMS validations, banking apps and mobile payment do.
  • If your home box works, Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi calling, banking apps) can take over until service is restored.

Why it still matters: for savers: keep a backup means of payment (a physical card, some cash) and, if possible, an authenticator app rather than SMS, so you are not stuck on an outage day.

For you

  • Could you pay today if your phone had no network?
  • Do your bank validations go through SMS or an authenticator app?
