−€39.2bn the change in French households' financial wealth in Q1 2026, despite €32.0bn of new investments

According to the Banque de France, households' main financial investments fell from €6,590.5bn at end-2025 to €6,551.3bn at end-March 2026. Yet households invested €32.0bn over the quarter, up from €26.1bn the previous one. The gap comes from revaluations and other volume changes: −€71.2bn. Unlisted shares and other equity fell from €1,507.4bn to €1,444.4bn, despite €3.7bn of net inflows.

Does saving always grow your wealth?

No: over a quarter, a fall in the value of what you already hold can wipe out more than the money you put in.

In other words: in Q1 2026, the money households invested was more than offset by the falling value of what they already owned.

Four caveats that belong with the number

  • It's a single quarter: over 2025 as a whole, this financial wealth grew by €175.2bn, including €46.8bn of revaluations.
  • These are changes in market value, not realised losses: they can reverse if prices recover.
  • Investments without market risk did not fall: euro-denominated life insurance edged up, from €1,570.6bn to €1,572.7bn.
  • The scope covers main financial investments, excluding property: it says nothing about households' total wealth or how it is shared among them.

Why it still matters: to judge how savings are doing, the amounts paid in aren't enough: you also have to look at what happens to the value of what's already there.

For you

  • Did you think French households' wealth could fall while they were investing more?
  • Do you track the value of your savings, or only your contributions?
