€100,000 before, €100,000 after deposit guarantee ceiling, identical before and after the license — what changes is who guarantees it

On August 10, 2026, the Autorité de contrôle prudentiel et de résolution and the European Central Bank granted a French banking license to Revolut Bank S.A. The accounts of eight million French users are progressively moving from the Lithuanian entity to the French one, with nothing for customers to do. The deposit guarantee ceiling stays at €100,000 per depositor: it has been harmonized across the EU since the 2014 directive.

So what actually changes?

The guarantor, and the product lineup. The guarantee moves from the Lithuanian fund to the French deposit guarantee and resolution fund. And the license opens up mortgage lending, as well as the Livret A and LDDS savings accounts, impossible under a Lithuanian license.

In other words: the announcement is real, but the most touted benefit — “your deposits are better protected” — isn't one. The ceiling was already there.

Three caveats, because they matter

  • Changing guarantors isn't nothing: relying on the French fund rather than the Lithuanian one simplifies procedures in case of failure, and falls under a supervisor you can reach in French.
  • The €100,000 ceiling applies per depositor and per institution, not per account. Several accounts at the same institution share the same guarantee.
  • The transition is gradual and the announced product lineup — mortgage lending, Livret A, LDDS — isn't available yet. A license authorizes, it doesn't deliver.

Why it still matters: when a bank announces a license, the useful question isn't “is this good news” but “what could I not do yesterday that I'll be able to do tomorrow.” Here: borrow and open a Livret A. Not be better protected.

For you

  • Do you know which fund currently guarantees the money sitting in your accounts?
  • And up to what amount, adding up all your accounts at the same institution?
