#EMPLOYMENT & SOCIETY

"Companies are cashing in on inflation." In the second quarter of 2026, the French corporate profit share did not move at all — and what kept it from falling, the national statistics institute says, was the drop in real wages.

Ze Finance fact card: Employment & society
31.5% the gross profit share of French non-financial corporations in the second quarter of 2026

The profit share measures gross operating surplus against value added: the portion of the wealth produced that stays with the company once wages and social contributions are paid. In the second quarter of 2026 it stood at 31.5% for non-financial corporations, unchanged from the previous quarter and below the 32.4% average for 2025. Insee puts this stability down to two offsetting forces: terms of trade hurt again by rising world energy prices, and falling real wages.

Do companies come out ahead when inflation rises?

Not this quarter: their profit share stalled at 31.5%, below its 2025 level, and it only held up because real wages fell.

In other words: a flat profit share can hide two opposing movements cancelling each other out.

Five caveats that belong with the number

  • This is an aggregate ratio across all non-financial corporations: it adds up sectors whose situations are nothing alike.
  • One quarter is not a trend: the ratio was 32.5% at the end of 2025, then 31.5% in both the first and second quarters of 2026.
  • The figures are adjusted for seasonal and working-day effects, and revised with every release.
  • The investment rate edged up, 22.8% after 22.7%: a flat profit share does not mean investment has stopped.
  • The self-financing ratio fell, 86.1% after 87.1%: less of that investment is covered by the companies' own resources.

Why it still matters: how value added is split between wages and profits is settled as much by inflation as by pay negotiations.

For you

  • Did you think corporate profit margins were rising in 2026?
  • Is a stable profit share good news if it rests on falling real wages?
